Moving into the new space has been challenging yet fun when it comes to home decorating. A little bit more country feels around here than I’m used to…but I’m learning to go along with it. I wanted to create a
cozy space in our home where we could hangout and enjoy some downtime. Being pleased with the results it’s now a blog post on how to create that happy vibes hangout spot.
Pick a place with lots of natural light.
When looking to create a cozy space I opt for places that get a lot of natural light. Whether it’s by the window, patio doors or even directly outside, anywhere that lets you soak up Vitamin D makes for a great spot and will be an instant mood lifter. The warmth from the radiating sun not to mention all the natural daylight to reduce that hydro bill if you end up using it to work from home.
To create a more intimate and cozy space I opted for an area that has built in seating instead of using a full on patio table with four chairs. Alternately a couple of benches with pillows are great options too. A small side table with an arrangement serves as the coffee table with just enough room for coffee mugs or cocktails.
Add a plant.
Indoor plants remove pollutants from the air and can be beneficial to ones mood by creating a happier ambiance. Plus they’re pretty and relaxing to look at. The newest addition to our home is a fig leaf plant and I had to be certain that my plant killing days were done before bringing this lil guy in. While I won’t tell you how many countless yuccas, palm leaf plants, and others I’ve killed in the past so I do understand that keeping plants alive is a real struggle. That being said may I suggest a ‘real looking’ fake plant. At least this way you won’t have to worry about watering it. And you can leave it outside all you want.
The little details.
A seasonal centrepiece makes for a great focal point and can also be a conversation starter. We’ve been spending a lot of time at the beach this summer and seeing as how sea shells are all the rage I created a diy sea shell inspired centrepiece for the coffee table.
To create the centrepiece I rounded up a square wooden tray and some pretty scented candles. While I always intended to paint the wooden tray while I ended up liking the light raw wood and kept it as is. I added sea shells for filler to complete the beach inspired diy centrepiece.
And of course you can never go wrong with a vase filled with fresh cut flowers.
Night lighting.
Finally, to transition that cozy spot from day to night patio lights or fairy lights are a great idea. While I really wanted to do this in our outdoor space it just didn’t happen this year. So next best thing was candles – they’re always great for creating that cozy ambiance. Aside from loose candles I love lanterns and usually have a few handy indoors and outdoors.
Hope you enjoyed my roundup. If you have any other great ideas on how to create a cozy space feel free to share them below.
