Over the last two years was when I started putting together a capsule wardrobe. Although at first I was entirely wrong about what a capsule wardrobe meant. After researching the topic I was quickly schooled that a capsule wardrobe was’t about creating a brand new lineup of pieces every season. But rather keeping the existing capsule intact while adding a few new pieces as well as removing some outdated ones. I immediately loved the idea and knew it would also be good for my wallet.
Getting longevity out of your spring summer capsule seemed like a great idea. Since then I’ve changed my thought process when shopping. Typically an implusive buyer, I started asking myself if I will wear said piece more than once or even twice in the season. And will I want to wear it the coming season? Asking myself these questions while shopping started weeding out a few unncessary purchases.
For instance these pink Free People paper bag pants. Pink was pretty hot last summer and I couldn’t see that trend going away anytime soon. Plus I really adore the paper bag waist and nicely enough these type of pants are everywhere this season. A basic white crop top is such a staple. A white crop pretty much goes with anything like a pair of high waisted shorts or even a maxi skirt.
The loose white cardigan from Gentle Fawn is a recent addition as well as the straw bag. By incorporating some key trending pieces from this season I’m able to pair them effortlessly with last season’s pieces. One piece of advice I typically offer for getting longevity out of your spring summer capsule is to look for minimalistic on trend pieces. Typically the more flashy and trend specific a garment is the more likely it’s not going to be around the following season. By opting for a more toned down piece you’re still getting the latest style with longevity into future seasons.
Speaking of longevity, this cardigan. It will most likely transition well into next season as it is a neutral and we are shifting more towards loose silhouettes. However the straw bag, which is all the rage right now, will most likely be outdated next season. Hence why I wasn’t willing to spend a fortune on one.
If you’re looking for more ideas I don’t think you can go wrong with denim cutoffs and a pair of slides. They’re both basic pieces which you can dress up or down and get a lot of wear out of them.
So just try to think of which items you know are short term vs long term investments when making purchases. This should help you with getting longevity out of your spring summer capsule
Top, Pants, Free People. Cardigan, Gentle Fawn. Bag, Lemonberry. Shoes, Zara. Necklace, Enclave Gems.
I love this interpretation of a capsule wardrobe. Like yourself, I used to think that capsule wardrobe is about having a limited amount of ‘classic’ pieces, but then I found out it is more about controlling our buying habits.
…love those pants! You look stunning.
